Chopta-Chandrashila Trek is one of the popular treks that can be undertaken round the year, in Garhwal Himalayas except during heavy snowing months of December & January. This is a beautiful trek, with difficulty level rated as easy to moderate. The trek passes through forests and vast meadows, and offers excellent views of snow clad Himalayas.
We start from Okhimath, and pass through Deoria tal, Chopta and Tungnath to reach the summit of Chandrashila for an amazing view of the Himalayas. Maximum altitude reached would be around 3950 at the summit of Chandrashila.
The region is a protected sanctuary for musk deer, and is rich in flora and fauna. Our first camp at Deoria tal is near a pristine lake ringed with forest. The view of Chaukhamba peaks is one of the most prominent in the entire journey. We would be further camping in the meadows of Chopta, and then at Tungnath. Each camp site would offer excellent views to the Himalayan peaks.
Tungnath is famous for the highest temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Beyond Tungnath there is a small summit called Chandrashila which is a very beautiful vantage point to experience Himalayas in a wide spectrum. One would see the entire range in almost a 270 degrees of visibility, with peaks like Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Nanda devi and Trishul among the most prominent.
Arrive Chopta and meet at the Reporting We will start early today. From the picturesque environs of Chopta, we will take the path through the arch leading up to the temple. Along the way, one may be able to spot a monal bird in the forest towards left. Himalayan Monal is the state bird of Uttrakhand. Tungnath is a short 2 km trek from Chopta. The temple is only visible in the last few hundred metres. It opens only in early summer and remains closed in winters. There are a few shops before the temple. We will head up past the temple to the peak. Chandrashila is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another story narrates that moon-god Chandra spent time here in penance. Stories apart, one gets to see a wide expanse of the most famous peaks of Garhwal from here. Soaking in the beautiful 360-degree views of the Himalayas we begin heading down to Chopta and reach by late afternoon.
Today, after breakfast you can check-out from the camp and may visit Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath enroute. It is the winter abode of the idols of Kedarnath and Madmaheshwar temples. The idols are brought here in palanquin when the Kedarnath temple closes in autumn.
